Book Week beyond the costumes
Book Week brought much-loved characters to life across Burgmann, with students arriving dressed in costumes inspired by books. Beyond the colour and fun, the week also offered opportunities to explore how stories are created, interpreted and shared.
Kindergarten to Year 2 students welcomed internationally published picture book author Shelley Unwin. Shelley took students behind the scenes of storytelling, exploring how an idea develops into a story and encouraging them to draw on their own interests, imagination and sense of adventure.
Shelley’s books have been published in Australia, North America and Europe and include Wait a Minute!, Hello, Baby!, You’re One!, You’re Two!, There’s a Baddie Running Through This Book! and Blast Off!
Book Week also extended into the wider community when three Year 12 Music students were invited to perform during a special preschool storytime at Gungahlin Library. Their music added another dimension to the session and gave this year’s Symphony of Stories theme a fitting expression.
Together, these experiences gave students different ways to engage with stories, as readers, emerging writers, musicians and audience members.
