Our History
From humble beginnings, Burgmann has grown and flourished. Our school began in the lounge rooms of Gungahlin parish members who envisioned a school for the local community with an Anglican identity and traditions.
1885 - 1967
Bishop Ernest Burgmann
The school was named “Burgmann Anglican School” after Bishop Ernest Henry Burgmann, who was Bishop of Canberra Goulburn from 1934 to 1950. Bishop Burgmann was a social activist and a passionate advocate for progressive education. Prime Minister Robert Menzies described him as a ‘most meddlesome priest’ in response to his advocacy for average Australians. His book “The Education of an Australian” was published in 1944.
1998
The Foundation
The foundation stone for Burgmann Anglican School was laid at the Valley Campus in November 1998 and the school opened in 1999 with 24 students.
1998-2008
Dr Paul Browning OAM
The first Principal was Mr Paul Browning. His legacy is evident in the buildings and traditions established in the school, including the ringing of hand held bells to mark the start of the school day.
2000-2001
Early Growth
The school grew rapidly with 76 students in 2000 and 266 students in 2001.
2005
Senior School and Grace Chapel
In 2005, Burgmann expanded to a Senior School with its first Year 9 classes. Grace Chapel was opened by Bishop Browning as a shared facility with Gungahlin Anglican Church and the school.
2008
First Graduating Class
In 2008, our first Year 12 students graduated.
2009 - 2021
Mr Steven Bowers
In 2009, Mr Steven Bowers was appointed as the second principal of Burgmann Anglican School.
2009 - 2011
Our Second Campus
In 2009 the Forde campus was opened, initially providing second Preschool to Year 2 campus. In 2011, the purpose-built Middle School was established, providing distinct locations to support each phase of learning for students.
2020
Opening of the Early Learning Centre
The Early Learning Centre was opened at the Valley Campus in 2020. This extended our care and learning journey for children from six months to Year 12.
2022 - Present
Ms Leonie Harwood
In 2022, Ms Leonie Harwood was appointed as the third principal of Burgmann Anglican School.
A Co-educational Independent School located in Gungahlin, ACT.
We acknowledge the Ngunnawal peoples as the traditional keepers on the land on which we gather. We recognise and honour their wisdom and education traditions. We commit ourselves to actively working towards reconciliation, stepping forward with grace, commitment and wisdom on this journey.
