The Middle School years are a significant time of growth as students move from childhood towards adolescence. At Burgmann, Years 6 to 8 learn together in a specialised Middle School at the Forde Campus, where students are supported to grow in independence, confidence, wellbeing and belonging.

Middle School at Burgmann
Middle School at Burgmann is intentionally designed to meet the needs of young adolescents. The structure provides a carefully supported bridge between Junior and Senior School, helping students remain connected to strong pastoral care while beginning to experience greater challenge, responsibility and independence in their learning.
Students benefit from age-appropriate programs, specialist facilities and evidence-based approaches that support both academic growth and the wellbeing of the whole child. With access to spaces such as the Design Hub, technologies, arts and music facilities, and specialist science labs, students are encouraged to explore their strengths, build positive learning habits and prepare with confidence for the opportunities of Senior School.

Learning Spaces
Middle School students learn across a range of environments designed to support connection, collaboration and active learning. Shared spaces, specialist classrooms and flexible learning environments encourage students to work independently, participate in discussion and engage confidently with different learning experiences.
Learning extends beyond traditional classroom settings through co-curricular activities, outdoor experiences, performances, library spaces and collaborative projects. These environments support students as they develop confidence, responsibility and a stronger sense of belonging within the Middle School community.

Middle School includes Years 6 to 8.
What is a Core teacher?
Core teachers play a central role in Middle School life. They are the primary point of contact for students and families, supporting students' wellbeing, organisation, learning and sense of belonging while working closely with specialist teachers.
What is Yuumma?
Yuumma is a dedicated time at the start of each school day where students connect with their Core teacher and classmates. Alongside daily organisation and school notices, students participate in conversations and activities that build relationships, foster belonging and support their wellbeing.
How are students supported during the transition into Middle School?
Transition into Middle School is carefully planned to help students feel confident and connected from day one. Through orientation experiences, Core classes, Yuumma and a strong pastoral care program, students quickly build relationships, establish routines and develop the skills they need to thrive.
How are families kept informed about learning?
The Burgmann Portal is the primary source of communication for Middle School families. It provides access to assessment tasks, learning feedback, reports, classroom information and important school notices. Parent-teacher interviews and regular communication with Core teachers complement the information shared through the Portal.
What learning opportunities are available beyond the classroom?
Students are encouraged to explore their interests beyond the classroom through co-curricular activities, leadership opportunities, clubs, competitions, music, sport and service. These experiences help students develop confidence, build friendships and discover new strengths.

How much homework is expected in Middle School?
Homework is designed to reinforce learning, prepare for assessments and develop positive study habits. Students can generally expect up to 60 minutes of home study each school night, including 20 minutes of reading. Tasks may include revision, research, reading and completion of learning activities.
What is Above & Beyond (AAB)?
AAB is delivered as an elective-style class for Year 7 and Year 8 students, where they come together to choose and pursue projects based on their interests. Rather than following a traditional subject curriculum, students engage in hands-on, collaborative learning experiences that build skills such as creativity, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving through real-world projects.
How does Middle School support student wellbeing?
Student wellbeing is embedded in everyday Middle School life. Through strong relationships with Core teachers, daily Yuumma, a dedicated wellbeing team and a culture of care, students develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of belonging.
