Jan Rawlins, a Junior School Inclusion Teacher and 2025 Burgmann Professional Learning Scholarship recipient, used her scholarship to deepen her understanding of inclusive education and student engagement.
As part of the 2025 Burgmann Professional Learning Scholarship, Jan Rawlins deepened her understanding of inclusive education and student engagement.
Jan attended the Diverse Learning Symposium as part of the National Education Summit in Melbourne. The conference brought together educators and experts from across the country to share insights into inclusive classrooms and strategies that support meaningful student engagement.

As a member of the Junior School Inclusion Team, Jan works closely with students who face a range of learning challenges. Her professional goal was to explore how teachers can strengthen student motivation and engagement, particularly for students who find learning difficult.
Central to this work is the understanding that every student enters the classroom with their own experiences, strengths and needs.

One of the most valuable insights from the symposium was the reminder that effective inclusive practice does not always require entirely new tools or programs. Sometimes it involves looking at familiar strategies in a different way and using them more intentionally.
This perspective influenced the way Jan supports students and works alongside classroom teachers. Wherever possible, the focus is on collaboration within the classroom environment rather than withdrawing students from lessons.
Jan works closely with teaching teams to co plan and co teach, ensuring students receive the support they need while remaining engaged in classroom learning.

Celebrating progress also became an important part of her work with students. By helping students recognise their growth and achievements, even in small steps, Jan aims to build confidence and strengthen students’ sense of belonging in the classroom.
These approaches continue to shape conversations within teaching teams as staff explore strategies that support every student to access learning and experience success.
Through the scholarship, Jan’s learning contributes to the school’s ongoing commitment to inclusive practice and ensuring that all students feel supported and capable in their learning.
