Recently, selected Middle School students from Years 6 to 8 took part in Burgmann’s second annual Girls in STEM program, led by Gifted and Talented Program Coordinator Belinda Cox.

Bringing together 30 students identified for their aptitude in science, mathematics and design, the program provides opportunities for students to apply their learning in a rigorous, hands-on context.

Working in cross-year teams, students undertook a fast-paced engineering challenge, designing and constructing devices to deliver “messages of harmony” to an audience. The experience required both creative and analytical thinking, with students refining their ideas, responding to challenges and working within time constraints.

Incorporating a Harmony Day theme, the program also encouraged students to consider the role of collaboration and communication in achieving successful outcomes.

Programs such as this reflect Burgmann’s commitment to Building Futures, developing the confidence, capability and critical thinking required for students to engage deeply with STEM learning.
