During the holidays, five Burgmann Anglican School alumni were presented with their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Awards at Government House. They were joined by long-time staff member Mr James Hassall, who received the Silver Distinguished Service Medal for his exceptional contribution to the development of young Australians through the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Program.
James, the Head of Mathematics Faculty in Senior School and Burgmann's Duke of Ed Co-ordinator, has been instrumental in establishing the program in three ACT schools and, at Burgmann, has supported more than 500 students through their Duke of Ed journey. His commitment and mentorship have played a pivotal role in helping students build confidence, resilience and a deep sense of purpose.
Congratulations to Gold Award recipients Emily Bala, Lily Ryan, Yifei Li, Lily Welling and Sam Welling. From hiking Mt Tennent in fog and rain to forming lasting connections through a Residential Project in Vanuatu, their reflections captured the spirit of growth and challenge that defines the Award.
At Burgmann, we’re proud to offer the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program and to celebrate both the young people who take it on and the educators who make it possible.
