Welcome Back and Funding

I was delighted to see our students return refreshed from the school holidays and ready for a busy Term 3. I am looking forward to the many opportunities this term to meet with families including the upcoming Christmas in July event organised by the P&F, the Year 9 2018 Information evening, Parent Teacher interviews, and Fathers’ Day events to name but a few. Winter co-curricular sport continues this term and I am very grateful to parents for the support of these activities in the midst of winter.

Following the passing of the Education Bill in the Commonwealth parliament the school is developing a 10 year plan to manage the changed financial circumstances as a result of the reduced recurrent commonwealth grants.

The school has been in discussions with the Minister for Education, Senator Simon Birmingham, and ACT Senator, Zed Seselja. We have also had a brief conversation with our local member of parliament, the Member for Fenner, the Hon Dr Andrew Leigh.

Our concern has been about gaining transitional support to these new financial arrangements to ensure the school continues to provide quality resources and programs for our students.

The commonwealth government has expressed an understanding of our circumstances and of the circumstances of other ACT independent schools who find themselves in a similar position.

Burgmann is in a strong financial position supported by the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, however, the school must plan for these changed circumstances.

The school is considering additional measures to minimise fee increases for parents. We are looking creatively at other services we may be able to provide our school community. We are working with our architects to develop short, medium and long term master planning for the school. The school will continue to reinvest in the infrastructure and buildings to ensure our facilities are maintained and improved to support the quality of the learning and teaching programs.

The School Board is endeavouring to ensure that tuition increases are as low as possible while continuing to invest in quality staff and ongoing development of our facilities in the Burgmann way.

The School Board, Mr Joel Anderson and I, together with our consultants, are developing a plan which will be announced to the school community by the conclusion of this term.
