On Wednesday 9 August, some students and staff attended the Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial commemorating the 75th anniversary of the loss of HMAS Canberra I. Burgmann has a special relationship with the HMAS Canberra III and each year our Year 7 students are invited to spend the day on the ship, whilst docked in Sydney, attending workshops covering leadership, engineering, navigation and humanitarian missions to disaster areas.

The ceremony on Wednesday was particularly poignant event for one of our staff, Mrs Meg Burch, whose grandfather, Flight Lieutenant Duncan Murchison, was aboard the HMAS Canberra I and lost at sea during the ship's final engagement at Savo Island in August 1942.

Through a discussion in a Year 10 WWII history lesson, a parent at the school, who also happens to be a Commander on HMAS Canberra III, organised for the reflection on the life of Flight Lieutenant Duncan Murchison during the Commemoration Ceremony for HMAS Canberra.

We are indeed blessed to have those in our community, such as Commander Ben Macdonald, who are willing to support and enrich the lives of our students and, indeed, our staff.
