Words matter: making time to check in

Sep 10, 2026 4:30 PM

Words matter, particularly when they help someone feel noticed, heard and supported.

Through our current Words Matter focus, students have been considering how language shapes the way we learn, connect and care for others. R U OK? Day offered another practical way to explore that idea, while reinforcing that meaningful check-ins are part of everyday relationships, not something reserved for one publicised day.

In Middle School, Year 7 students put their learning into action by planning and leading a range of activities for Year 6 as part of their Health assessment. Students had been studying ways to support mental health, physical fitness and wellbeing before working in small groups to prepare an activity for their younger peers.

The resulting sessions included physical games, rock painting, gratitude activities, conversations, origami, board games and puzzles. Each offered a different way for students to connect, spend time together and consider the role everyday activities can play in supporting wellbeing.

Staff also shared some treats at recess, accompanied by a timely reminder to check in with colleagues when the day, week or term becomes busy.

In Senior School, the Rock Band brought students together for a lunchtime concert, combining live music with the message that it is OK not to be OK.

Checking in does not need to be complicated. It can begin with making time to talk, share an activity or simply be together.
