Lessons

Lessons can be individual (private) or shared (with one other student). Parents should seek advice from music staff to determine which is more suitable for their child. Opportunities for group lessons (lessons shared with 2 or more other students) are available on some instruments. Appropriateness of group instrumental/voice lessons depends on the number of students learning the same instrument at the same level of achievement. This would be determined at the commencement of lessons. The type of lesson is a significant factor. However, greater progress is always determined by effective regular practice between each lesson.

All piano lessons are available as individual (private) only.

Individual lessons can provide flexibility in accommodating the interests and strengths of the student and focussed preparation for forthcoming examinations. Shared lessons provide students with peer support, and opportunities to develop as members of a band section. However, continuity may fluctuate during shared lessons when one member of the class is unable to attend the weekly lesson.

Tutors structure their lessons to include warm-up routines, hear progress in technical work and set pieces, teach new material/concepts and hear a performance of something known. This structure provides students with an excellent practice routine, a clear outline of tutor expectations and a positive conclusion to each lesson.

Tutors also outline the work covered in each lesson and work to be covered prior to the next lesson in the student's Music Practice Diary.
