Ginninderra Award
Ginninderra Award Scheme
Know yourself, and then serve others
Background
The term Ginninderra derives from the language of the Ngunawal people, it means sparkling light. Just as a light helps us to find our way, it is our hope for Middle School students that this Award Scheme may guide them to discover and develop their God-given talents and strengths. By developing leadership skills, involvement in the school and general community and working on areas that are of interest, we hope to make this hope a reality for the students in our care.
What is the Structure of this Award Scheme?
This non-competitive Award is comprised of three levels. In keeping with the School's intention to acknowledge our local Aboriginal heritage, each level is named after a local Aboriginal community.
Level One - Ngarigo
Level Two - Ngunawal
Level Three - Wiradyuri
- For each level there are specific criteria that need to be met in order to continue to the next level or receive the Award.
- These criteria relate to leadership, community service and personal areas of interest.
- Every student (Years 6 - 8) has the opportunity to participate and would commence the Award at Level One.
- There is no time restriction for the completion of each level. Students can work towards each level throughout their Middle Schooling at their own pace.
- Students do not have to complete all three levels, although that should be considered to be the ultimate goal.
How Do the Students Keep Track of Their Participation?
At the commencement of their participation each student will be issued with a booklet. This booklet reiterates information regarding the structure of the Award Scheme, as well as guidelines for students to follow in order to meet the criteria for the three different levels. Upon completion a level this booklet would be presented to the co-ordinating teacher for their approval.
What Then?
Formal presentations will be made at the end of each year at the Middle School Awards Night. These presentations would be made to students who had completed any of the levels, Level One (Ngarigo), Level Two (Ngunawal) or Level Three (Wiradyuri). Apart from the satisfaction that students should feel upon completing a level, it is hoped that these Awards could be used to assist the students form their Curriculum Vitae.
